Gopal Subramanium discusses the future of the UK’s constitution

Having started his career in the Supreme Court of India, Gopal Subramanium served as India’s Solicitor General between 2009 and 2011 and has since become a respected scholar in legal philosophy, human rights theory, and constitutional law.

After what has been a period of transition in the UK, Subramanium believes that this is an important moment to reconsider the UK’s uncodified constitution. While the UK has countless traditions, conventions, and values to operate as a democracy, there may be further benefits to translating these into definitive principles. One of these benefits is offering a source of universal identity to the British people, while another is guaranteeing checks and balances between branches of government.

In the video below, Subramanium explains why this is a pivotal moment for the UK’s constitution and why it may be a good time to consider a codified constitution.
